CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character Name: Canada (Madeline Williams)
Age: 500ish; Looks to be in her late teens, early twenties
Canon: Axis Powers Hetalia (Nytolia AU)
Canon Point: April 2015
Character Information: Canada in Axis Powers Hetalia, Nytolia Canada, History of Canada, and a small history writeup for Canada as a woman versus a man. This is also brought up in the personality.
Personality: Canada is and is not much like her male counterpart. In many ways, they react the same way. They're polite to the point of ridiculousness and often avoid conflict by over apologizing, even when not at fault. They share a love of hockey, a sense of pride in their people and most of all, they share the flaw of being overlooked.
At first look, Canada seems forgettable. She doesn't stand out to a stranger, since a great deal of who she is is hidden behind small talk. She has a tendency to move the conversation to the other person because she's simply not used to talking about herself at length and she often finds the people she's friends with enjoy having a willing listener. She's friendly and eager to get to know people but it's often a push to get her to open up about her own life, rather than her people or her land. Her interests often only come to light when they're asked about or in a burst when she realizes they shares a love for something.
When encouraged to open up and be herself, she can be eager to talk. She's fond of the large plains and forests in her land and can talk for hours about various outdoor sports, like hiking, canoeing or even rock climbing. She loves to read and even if she's not particularly talented with art herself, she certainly appreciates it. As for politics, well, as a nation she has to bend herself a little to the wills of her people. It's safe to say that she straddles the average opinions of her people, with perhaps, a little more concern for womens rights. It is a pressing issue for someone like her and something she had to cope with most of her life.
This is really where her tendency to shy away from conflict hurts her. She's gotten better about standing up to her bosses when they ignore her opionon (or simply don't ask for it) but it's still a struggle to sit up and point out a flaw or argument they are passing over. Lately, she finds they do try to include her more in their decision making but occasionally they backslide and claim they know better than her. It's definitely frustrating to have to deal with politicians who see her apparent age and gender and think she doesn't know what she's talking about.
She isn't exactly a ticking time bomb but dealing with people who step over her thoughts and opinions has a tendency to build up and more than once, she has burst into a loud rant. Canada tends to apologize afterwards, firm in her thoughts but apologetic about the method they came out. Her somewhat thoughtless neighbor America has been on the recieving end of one such rant on a few occasions.
That isn't to say that she rants to America often. They have a close relationship, one that had been slowly rebuilt after America's revolution. While they didn't precisely grow up together, they were two neighbors in the British Empire and found each other to be decent company while England was away. Even when America grew up quicker than Canada, they were still seen easily as sisters by those who saw them and to a degree, themselves. The way America left the Empire left scars on both their hearts and they only spoke over battlefields for quite some time. Slowly, the bond came back and their relationship evolved to what it is now. Close friends, not sisters perhaps, but nations who can tease each other and who visit each other freely. It'd be easiest to say that though England has had the most influence over Canada in terms of who she is today, America is still the nation she considers her best friend. A somewhat annoying and childish best friend, but one nonetheless.
England was her guardian and still tries to fill that role from time to time. They too have a bond, Canada keeping her queen as her own and looking most similar to England in looks alone. She has France's eyes but England's hair and demeanor. England is a bundle of issues to Canada. She's a guardian who was never quite a mother and a friend who was never always there. She dragged Canada along into her wars and her conflicts and Canada obeyed for much of her childhood and even after given control over herself. It was only in the most recent wars, the World Wars, that Canada began to resent how she was perceived. She had control over her laws but had little power in the world beyond and was often seen as still somewhat under British control. She began to take extra steps to assert herself and her independence from England from time to time and her relationship with England became more distant as her relationship with America strengthened. Her time with England gave her a lot of strength and she's grateful for her guidance through the time of growing up, but she's also grateful that England let her go. Becoming her own person and nation cemented her place in the world and opened it to new possibilities.
While things in Canada's personal world opened up with the advent of planes and phones, things really became global with the invention and spread of the internet and mobile phones. She found the world had a lot of offer and she loves the ability to keep in touch with others and finds text to be an easier method of response than talking on telephones. It reminds her of shorter faster letters. However, don't expect her to be good with technology. She relies on America to bring her up to date with such things or she would still have a flip phone.
